Are There Any Hello! Project Cover Performances That Surpass the Original?

February 28, 2018

Oda and someone else (it depends) doing Kanashiki Heaven.

Berryz Koubou's Shabondama.

       When was this?

       Do you have a video?

For some reason it hasn't been released on video.

It's a shame -- their dancing was funny, too.

Country Girls' Cha Cha Sing.

Isn't that just because it was the original Momochi-sama's last performance?

Morning Musume's cover of that one song that goes something like, "Ai wa ai ni ai wo aishitari wa shinai?"

*["Love doesn't love love to love."

Real lyric is "Ai wa ai no ue ni ai wo tsukuttari wa shinai sa"/"Love doesn't create a love that's greater than love," LOL.]

              I agree with this, LOL.

Berryz's version was too scary. I wanted it to be sung more smoothly, like Momusu did.

Isn't that a song that should be scary? LOL.

The problem is that currently, no one's being surpassed.

S/mile-germe's Help Me!!

My Days for You.

Miyabi-chan's Yuki no Hana.

Berikyuu have a lot of simple songs, but whether others can handle singing them is another question.

Juice=Juice's Narihajimeta Koi no BELL and stuff.

Angerme's 2016 version of Shabondama.

Only a naive young wota would think that just Berikyuu's songs are compositionally restricted.

If you're talking about groups with a lot of simple songs, look first at Momusu.

Tanaka surpasses basically all the songs she covers.

Also, I find this one time to time; this is also better than the original:

       48: 名無し募集中。。。@\(^o^)/

You're right about Tanaka -- her Daite yo! Please Go On was insane.

I've never listened to Melon Kinenbi, but wasn't Shiba-chan [Shibata Ayumi] pretty good? She            had a pretty falsetto.

Tanaka does do a lot of songs better, but...

There's no way she surpassed Goto.

Berryz Koubou's Shabondama.

       Wow, this line distribution, LMFAO.

Rinapuu's Amazuppai Haru ni Sakurasaku at HinaFes.

Juice=Juice's Inspiration.

I don't know whether or not they beat the original, but J=J's Kiss Me Aishiteru was fantastic too.

I like Angerme's version of Shabondama from HinaFes better than the original.

Ishikawa Rika praised Berryz's Shabondama. She said it was stylish.

Recent Momusu songs are much harder than the early ones.

The strongest Shabondama unquestionably comes from the original members.

Tsuji, Kago, Takahashi, and Fujimoto are the best at screaming those lines.

You just can't top them.

The only lines no one else can do are Fujimoto's.

Tsubaki's Tsugitsugi Zokuzoku.

In Angerme's Shabondama, Kananan's Osaka-ben monologue easily surpassed the original.

J=J's Inspiration is incredible.

No matter who sings it, Shabondama will always have the original as a baseline.

Was Fujimoto popular back when she was actually in Momusu?

S/mileage's Kimi wa Jitensha, Watashi wa Densha de Kitaku.

Other groups often do C-ute songs better than the original.

Kobushi's Mukidashi de Mukiatte.

Sayuki's ad-lib in Magic of Love surpasses Ruru's.

Hey man, I like Sayuki, but that's going too far.

Doesn't that just mean it's still a victory for Juice=Juice as a whole?

Guess I steamed you up too much, LOL.

But Ruru does it with kind of an accent.

C-ute's version of The Matenrou Show.

No one can surpass Matsuura, LOL.

Berryz's Kiss Me.

C-ute's Matenrou.

Recently there have been a lot of songs that have a lot of force and energy behind them, and that certainly has been working, but they're surprisingly not hard songs.

C-ute's Kiss Me definitely falls under that category, and a lot of recent Momusu stuff is like that too.

It's convenient for them to have songs like that that sell, but it's also why you get tired of those songs easily.

No one ever surpasses the original.

Egashira 2:50's Wakuteka.

Momusu '17's Egao YES Nude.

If we're limiting it to Hello! Pro songs, Goto and Matsuura's Memory Seishun wa Hikari.

That is all.

Zukki's 1oku3zenman Sou Diet Oukoku.

Momusu '14's Fantasy ga Hajimaru.

Kago Ai's Boogie Train.

Sudo Maasa's The Bigaku.

I thought Tanaka's Memory Seishun no Hikari during their Single Daizenshuu tour was the strongest. Only a teenager could produce that kind of angst.

She shot an MV to this song on a ferris wheel when she was in middle school, so it's kind of              already her song.

Apparently Tsunku used Reina to temporarily rearrange the whole song, so the way she sings it        is different from the original anyway.

I predict that Jealousy Jealousy will be covered at this year's HinaFes.

And no matter which group does it, I feel like they'll be able to surpass the original.

Niigaki Risa's Boogie Train.

If we're including arrangements, S/mileage's Namida GIRL and Chu! Natsu Party.

They haven't performed them recently for some reason, but I wish they would.

"Naite sumu nara, Naa~kiyagare"

The "Naa" part is important.

It has nothing to do with skill; Tsuji, Kago, Fujimoto, and Takahashi deliver it with fierce intensity.

Especially compared to Yaguchi and Ishikawa.

Combine all the covers early 1st-gen S/mileage did and you have the strongest bundle of idol performances easily.

Making This is Unmei a cute song was ground-breaking.

It became a totally different song, huh?

I like it when they change drastically like that.

It becomes something else entirely, performed with the kind of sorrow only the members of Momusu could produce.

Inaba Atsuko and Goto Maki sang a song together at some point, and Gocchin totally couldn't keep up.

But I forgot what song it was.

Tanaka can even do group songs better on her own.

Regardless of whether they surpassed the original, J=J's covers like Inspiration are so polished they've made them their own.

Same with Narihajimeta Koi no BELL. I mean, it's just because they're really skilled.

When H!P groups cover H!P songs, they tend to just mimic the original, so...

It's a matter of how they think about covers. If they're praised for showing their individuality              while still mimicking the original, they'll just keep imitating.

I don't know whether she did better than the original, but Tanaka sang Tsugitsugi Zokuzoku all by herself, LOL.

In all honesty, covers of Mano's songs tend to surpass the originals.

Meimei and Risako's Magic of Love at an H!P concert.

I feel like at some point, Kago-chan and Melon Kinenbi did a cover of Anata Nashi de wa Ikite Yukenai that was better than Berryz.

But they were still just kids, so it doesn't count as much.

Berryz only perfected Anata Nashi at the very, very end of their run as a group.

It would be hard to surpass the final-form Berryz' Anata Nashi.

Miyabi-chan and Risako do better than the originals most of the time.

Momochi's Ayaya is also pretty good.

I also liked the cover of Yattaruchan that Kumai-chan and Haachin and some others did.

I thought this was seriously beautiful.

Angerme doesn't surpass the original when they do covers; rather, they sing them as if they're their own songs.

Conclusion: Covers never really surpass the original, but it's a matter of taste which one you prefer.

Well, the original version of a song is always the one that's optimized for the singer's age and style.

Generally, if there's no difference in ability, it's hard to surpass the original singer.

Emi: I always prefer watching the Harocons that have shuffles because I feel like it's way more interesting to watch a group cover another group's song than sit through another round of Here's Every Song Off Our Latest Single ("jama shinaide... HERE WE GO"). Although admittedly I enjoy that too, LOL.

I like Gaki-san's version of Egao ni Namida ~Thank You! Dear My Friends~ more than the original, although that may be because she's my lord and savior. ;)
